May 29 Baby doves have left the nestToday the 3rd generation of baby doves that have been born here have finally flown and left the nest... to move into the old wood pigeon nest further down the wall that the doves also nested in last year. This nest has been so well built and used by both wood pigeons & doves in the same year it has survived the winter and the recent storms. Link at the bottom of links page on www.sheilanorris.com May 20 No drought in PortsmouthThis article was in the Portsmouth News today: 'No drought' for city this summer
A
higher level of rainfall combined with Portsmouth's unique geographic
location means our communities do not face a drought this summer.
Nationwide the drought has been caused by an exceptionally dry winter, but this has not been the case in Portsmouth.Between October and February there was 384.8mm of rain, compared to an average of 341.6 across the whole of the south-east. The chalk hills in the South Downs and Portsdown Hill act like a sponge, taking every drop of the much-needed rainfall. Portsmouth Water also has one of the lowest water leakage levels compared to other companies in the region. The company loses 6.6 million gallons per day, while Southern Water leaks 20.2 million, South-West, 18.2 million, and South-East, 15.1 million. The worst offender is Thames Water which loses 200 million gallons every day. The water industry loses 800 million gallons a day in leaks, enough to meet the needs of 24 million people a day. But water regulator Ofwat say this has no bearing on hosepipe bans. An Ofwat spokesman said: 'The reasons behind water shortages is not leaks. The number of leaks across the country have reduced by one third in the last 10 years. Cllr Alex Bentley, said: 'Portsmouth Water's fortune is at others' expense. 'There are others in the country who have a struggle every year with water shortages. 'We need to have a National Grid of water.' Good luck LindaGood luck to Linda who will be walking the London Marathon route tonight to raise money for Breast Cancer. Good on ya! x May 17 Portsmouth CongestionHere are some recent photos of the traffic jams I sit in as I travel to clients' houses, although according to some sources we only have congestion on Saturday afternoons when the football's on... I don't think so! We are close to gridlock but none of the authorities have a 'plan' for Portsmouth or any suggestion about what they're going to do about it... they just keep on building! |
